  • UPSC Exam Syllabus:

    Union Public Service Commission has a set exam pattern in conducting the examination in three stages for various posts such as  Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service(IFS), Indian Police Service(IPS), Indian Revenue Service(IRS)

    The exam is divided into three stages:

    1. Preliminary Examination 
    2. Mains Examination
    3. Personality Interview

    UPSC Prelims Exam is the objective type exam which has two papers:

    Paper 1: General Studies
    Paper 2: Civil Services Aptitude Test

    ►UPSC Prelims Paper 1 General Studies Syllabus:

    This exam will be of 200 marks to be attempted in a maximum duration of 2 hours. The questions will be asked from the below topics:

    1. Current events of national and international importance.
    2. History of India and Indian National Movement.
    3. Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.
    4. Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.
    5. Economic and Social Development - Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
    6. General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity, and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization General Science

    UPSC Prelims Paper 2 CSAT Syllabus:

    The exam will be of 200 marks to be attempted in 2 hours. The questions will be asked from the following sections:

    1. Comprehension
    2. Interpersonal skills including communication skills
    3. Logical reasoning and analytical ability
    4. Decision-making and problem solving
    5. General mental ability
    6. Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. - Class X level) 

    UPSC Mains Exam Syllabus:

    The candidates who clear the Prelims exam are only eligible to appear in the UPSC Mains Exam. The exam is of 1750 marks, having 9 papers in which two papers are of 300 marks that are the qualifying papers (English and an Indian Language).

    The language papers will have questions from the following topics:

    Essay – 100 marks
    Reading comprehension – 60 marks
    Precis Writing – 60 marks
    Translation:
    English to compulsory language (e.g. Hindi) – 20 marks
    Compulsory language to English – 20 marks
    Grammar and basic language usage – 40 marks

    The Indian language can be chosen from the official languages of India.

    Paper - I: Essay (Can be written in the medium or language of the candidate's choice) 250 Marks
    Paper-II: General Studies- I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society) 250 Marks
    Paper-III: General Studies- II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations) 250 Marks
    Paper-IV: General Studies- III (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) 250 Marks
    Paper-V: General Studies- IV (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude) 250 Marks
    Paper-VI:  Optional Subject - Paper I 250 Marks
    Paper-VII: Optional Subject - Paper-II (A Candidate can also take up literature as an optional subject and candidate need not be a graduate in that language’s literature.)

    UPSC Personality Test/ Interview:

    The final stage of selection of candidates is the Personality Test which will be for 275 marks.
