would suggest you go through Clayden, Greeves, Warren's Organic Chemistry (OUP). The approach is not using VBT, but rather MOT. If you accept MOT, then this book is a dream... if you go through Chapter 5 (2nd ed), then you will find you can write basic mechanisms just using logic and no memorizing. For example, the famous SN2 is logical, as are the reactions involved... Very few reactions are there which are different from the basics acquired from Ch-5 only... Even these reactions are so eye-poppingly different, if you take an interest, they will remain in your memory.... Nucleophiles and Electrophiles are the key to the lock called Organic Chemistry, not blind memorizing....
