Every year Railway Recruitment Board opens up many vacancies for people who wish to work for Indian Railways. RRB is also the largest recruiter in India for government jobs; RRB has brought an ocean of opportunities for thousands of job aspirants. Indian Railways has started the recruitment drive for Assistant Loco Pilots, Technicians, Station Master, TC, and RRB 21 Regions (ALP, Technician Grade 3). The recruitment will be done throughout India based on a written test; as per the official notification released by RRB ALP, a single application will be required to submit which should be familiar to all the posts announced. RRB ALP Selection Procedure:

The recruitment exam for the Assistant Loco Pilot post has a stage-based selection procedure where the aspirant has to clear all the stages. The Railway Recruitment Board examines the capable candidates for the position through this recruitment exam. There are three exams, after which the candidate has to produce the valid certificates for their selection.

There are two stages of exams similar for ALP and Technician Posts, and the candidates who are keen for the ALP post have to appear for the Aptitude Test. The RRB ALP Selection Procedure includes:

  1. RRB ALP Stage 1 Computer-Based Test

  2. RRB ALP Stage 2 Computer-Based Test

  3. Computer-Based Aptitude Test (CBAT)

RRB announces the vacancies for various Railways/Production units from time to time. The candidates who will secure marks in Stage 1, according to the set criteria of minimum qualifying marks, will have to choose the option for RRB and the preference for Railways and the post within the chosen RRB. The candidates have the option of selecting only ONE RRB and, so, the selection of railways.

After providing the option for the specific RRB/Railways and the posts, the candidates will be shortlisted for 2nd stage CBT as 15 times the updated vacancies of RRB. The merit will only be the base for the shortlisting. The shortlisted candidates will get the information about it through the registered email ID and the phone number; they can visit the official website and download their e-call letters to appear for ALP 2nd stage exam.

RRB ALP Exam Pattern:

The recruitment exam for ALP and Technician posts are similar until the Second Stage CBT, and there is an aptitude test only for the Assistant Loco Pilot post. The first stage CBT will have 75 MCQs within a time frame of 60 Minutes. The second stage CBT has two parts: Part A and Part B together, for 2 hours and 30 minutes.

RRB ALP Stage 1 CBT is the screening test, and the Stage 2 Part B test is the qualifying test where the candidates are tested for the relevant posts. Part B will have questions from the specific qualifications they have mentioned during the application form filling.

Key points of RRB ALP Exam Pattern:

  1. The first stage CBT will have 75 MCQs in the English Language; the time duration for CBT is 60 minutes. The exam will be in online mode. RRB ALP Stage 1 questions are from 4 sections that are:

    1. Mathematics: 20 Questions

    2. General Intelligence and Reasoning: 25 Questions

    3. Basic Science of Engineering: 20 Questions

    4. General Awareness on Current Affairs: 10 Questions

  2. The Second Stage CBT is the qualifying in nature; it has 100 Questions from the same sections as First Stage CBT. The time duration is 90 Minutes for Part A. Part A will have the questions from 4 units that are:    

    1. Mathematics: 25 Questions

    2. General Intelligence and Reasoning: 25 Questions

    3. Basic Science of Engineering: 40 Questions

    4. General Awareness on Current Affairs: 10 Questions

RRB ALP Stage 2 CBT Part B will test the capability and knowledge about the Relevant Trade. The question is from the trade syllabus directed by the Director-General of Employment & Training (DGET). The candidates with various qualifications have the relevant trades accordingly, which they have to choose.

*The candidates have a degree or diploma in the described field or the combination of different disciples of the specified course.

  1. For the second stage CBT, the candidates will be selected 15 times the vacancies, including all the communities from the first stage CBT. The candidates have to obtain the prescribed minimum marks to be on the selection list.

  2. After the conduct of Second Stage CBT, RRB will shortlist the candidates for the third stage, and it will be 8 times the number of ALP vacancies available. The candidates will be selected on the basis of the performance in Second Stage CBT Part A and Part B.

  3. The third stage of selection is the Computer-Based Aptitude Test that is for the candidates that have opted for ALP posts only.

  4. The candidates will have to secure 42 marks to qualify in each of the test battery of CBAT.

  5. CBAT will be in bilingual mode, that is, the options will be in both languages English & Hindi.

  6. RRB will draw the ALP merit list following 70% of marks in ALP Stage 2 Part A CBT and rest from CBAT. 

​RRB ALP Marking Scheme:

As RRB ALP is conducted in stages, the first two stages have the provision of negative marking. RRB ALP Stage 1 CBT and Stage 2 CBT has the negative marking of 1/3rd. All questions in both the stages are dedicated to 1 mark. The third stage of CBAT has no negative marking.

The level of difficulty will vary as the First Stage CBT is of a screening nature as compared to Second Stage CBT that is a qualifying test.
