Exam Pattern of HPJS:

Preliminary Examination: Prelim Examination Process comprises of three exams, that is, CIVIL LAW I, CIVIL LAW II & Criminal Law, that are held in order to shortlist candidates for the Main Examination that is held later.

  • Mode of Exam is offline.
  • Civil Law-I of 1 hour for 100 Marks
  • Civil Law-II of 1 hour for 100 Marks
  • Criminal Law Paper is of 1 hour for 100 marks
  • All questions are of equal marks with no negative marking criteria.
  • Question asked are MCQ types.
  • Question paper is bilingual, in Hindi and English languages.

HPJS Mains Exam Pattern: Main Examination Process comprises of five written exams that include essay-based questions.

  • Paper 1 (Civil Law I)- 200 marks
  • Paper 2 (Civil Law II)- 200 marks
  • Paper 3 (Criminal Law)- 200 marks
  • Paper 4 (English Composition)- 150 marks
  • Paper 5 (Language, Hindi)- 100 marks

Each candidate needs to have secured at least 45% marks in all subjects except Hindi, for which the minimum qualifying marks are 33%, to be eligible for the final interview. The interview round will be of 150 marks.

Selection Process HPJS State Service Exam

HPPSC has set a three-part selection procedure; first part is the prelim exam, then second part is main exam which will be followed by the Personal Interview in the third part. Aspirants who qualify the prelim round will be allowed to appear for the mains exam and then the candidates shortlisted after mains will be called for the final stage, that is, the interview.

The syllabus for Preliminary Examination

Civil Law-I: Code of Civil Procedure. Indian Evidence Act, Indian Stamp Act, Himachal Pradesh Courts Act, 1976 and Specific Relief Act

Civil Law-II: Indian Contract Act, Hindu Law, Indian Limitation Act, Transfer of Property Act and H.P. Urban Rent Control Act.

Criminal Law: Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code, Chapter-XVII (section 138 to 143) of the Negotiable Instruments Act, H.P. Excise Act-2011 as Applicable to the State of H.P., Wild Life Protection Act and Indian Forest Act.

The syllabus for Paper 1, 2 and 3 Main exams will be same as for the prelim exams.

Tips to crack HPJS

You need speed to finish HPPSC State Services Exam within the prescribed time limit. Go through the detailed topics listed on HPPSC official website and start with the ones that you are good at.

The prelim exam will be based on objective type questions. But the Main Exam will require candidates to write long answers in Hindi as well as in English. It is important to be selective about the study material to study smart and save time. Candidates must practise writing in Hindi and English for essay type questions. The length of descriptive type questions will be from 205 words to 1000 words, which will take time to think and write, so reading about various topics, current events will help.

•             Have a strategy/study plan regarding what to do and how to do. Also, maintain a time table and allow time for each subject chapter wise so that you can track your progress as you move forward. After each study session keeps 1 hour for revision of topics learned/practised.

•             Make Social Studies, Economics and some Culture topics your strong suit. Read newspapers every day to stay updated on the nation and international issues, current events, corporate news, economy and important announcements.

•             Become smart by attempting questions that you are sure of first, then come to the questions you’re in doubt. But don’t attempt them anyway, remember negative marking is a factor here. Therefore, try to attempt the questions you are absolutely sure of.

•             Manage your time properly; give an appropriate amount of time to each section. Try to improve your time by practising as many online tests as possible. •             Studying in a stretch for hours can be tedious and hard and also not so good. Therefore, try to study at several times in regular sessions during a day. This will make learning easy and fun, also you will have enough time to brush up the already studied topics in between intervals.

•             It is very important to maintain proper health, so you don’t fall sick on the big day. Give your brain an appropriate time to refresh itself. Don’t rush too much information into your head than its limit allows. Take it slow and steady. And get at least eight hours of sleep each night.
