Mathematics Admission Test UK Exam Pattern and Details



Mathematics Admission Test is a subject oriented examination for undergraduate courses in Mathematics, Computer Science and their joint degrees. This mathematics exam is for those aspiring to study in the universities of United Kingdom. The exam is set to reach out all students including the ones without further Mathematics A Level. For Mathematics applicants, the ones eligible to apply must have studied either of the combinations as Maths & Philosophy, Maths & Computer and Maths & Statistics. The application process can be through either individual registration or school registration. A school registration will include where a school will register itself as a test centre where all the students of the same school will appear for the exam. The exam will be conducted for 2hours 30 minutes, for 14 questions to be attempted very carefully.

Exam Pattern

MAT Pattern consist of two sections, where the duration of the examination is 2hours 30 minutes.

  • The first section consists of first question that has 10 Multiple Choice Questions, carrying 4 marks each. Each question has 5 options, out of which one option must be selected.
  • The second section consists of questions 2-7, out of which any 4 have to be attempted. These are Long Answer Type Questions, carrying 15 marks each.

The total number of question to be attempted are 14 questions. The suggestion to attempt long answer type questions according to the field are:

  •  For Mathematics, Maths & Philipsophy, and Maths & Statistics applicants, 1,2,3,4,5 questions must be attempted.
  • For Maths & Computer applicants, 1,2,3,4,5,6 questions must be attempted.
  • For Computer Science, Computer Science & Philosophy applicants 1,2,5,6,7 questions must be attempted.

Tip & Tricks

  • To roughly define the marking criteria, the student's mathematical kowledge and approach towards the solution is checked.
  • The syllabus is more or less corresponding to the C modules from A-level ones, where the student must be clear about his teachniques and approach to the A level study.
  • Though the spare sheets are provided in the end of the answer booklets, only the properly attempted answers in the booklet are marked.
  • No calculators or formula sheets are permitted during the examination.
