  • The UPSC exam pattern for the Preliminary stage consists of two papers, conducted on one day. Both the papers comprise objective type questions with multiple choice of answers. The prelims examination is a qualifying stage to filter candidates for the mains exam.There are a total of nine papers in the UPSC Mains Exam including two language papers that are qualifying in nature, one essay paper, four General Studies papers, and two optional papers.

  • UPSC Exam Pattern:

    Union Public Service Commission holds a vast umbrella having questions from various topics. UPSC conducts a common exam for various posts and it is conducted in three stages:

    ► UPSC Preliminary Exam
    ► UPSC Mains Exam
    ► Personality Test/ Personal Interview

    UPSC Prelims Exam Pattern:

    The Prelims exam consists of two papers: Paper 1 (General Studies) and Paper 2 (Civil Services Aptitude Test).

    ■ Paper I Pattern :

    1. Paper 1 will have 100 questions of 200 marks.
    2. The questions asked will be of objective type.
    3. The exam duration for Paper 1 is 2 hours.
    4. The candidate will be awarded 2 marks for every correct answer and a negative marking of 1/3 will be deducted for the incorrect answers.

    ■ Paper 2 Pattern:

    1. Paper 2 will have 80 questions of 200 marks.
    2. The questions asked will be of objective type.
    3. The exam duration for Paper 2 is 2 hours.
    4. The candidate will be awarded 2.5 marks for every correct answer and a negative marking of 1/3 will be deducted for the incorrect answers.

    **Both Prelims Paper 1 and Paper 2 will be bilingual: English and Hindi

    UPSC Mains Exam Pattern:

    1. The candidates who will qualify UPSC Prelims Exam will only be suitable to give UPSC Mains Exam. UPSC Mains Exam stage will have 9 papers that will include two qualifying papers (Language Exam)  that will have questions of descriptive type.
    2. The duration of each exam will be 3 hours.
    3. Paper A and Paper B (language Papers) will be qualifying papers for 300 marks each.
    4. Paper A is an Indian language exam that the candidate has to choose from the official languages of India.
    5. The remaining 7 papers are for 250 marks constituting to 1750 marks for the examination.

    6. The nine papers of UPSC Mains Exam are:

    ► Paper A: The Indian Language Exam
    ► Paper B: English Language
    ► Paper - I: Essay (Can be written in the medium or language of the candidate's choice)
    ► Paper-II: General Studies- I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society) 
    ► Paper-III: General Studies- II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations) 
    ► Paper-IV: General Studies- III (Technology, Economic Development, Bio-diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management) 
    ► Paper-V: General Studies- IV (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude) 
    ► Paper-VI:  Optional Subject - Paper I 
    ► Paper-VII: Optional Subject - Paper-II (A Candidate can also take up literature as an optional subject)

    UPSC Personality Test:

    The last stage of selection is the interview for 275 marks. The final list of selection will be based on the UPSC Mains Exam and Interview.

  • UPSC conducts civil service exams every year and millions of Civil service aspirants prepare for these exams.

    The exam pattern is as below:
    1.Preliminary Examination - Usually conducted on last week of May/first week of June, results by August 
    2.Main Examination - Usually conducted around November, results by February/March the following year.
    3.Interview - Usually conducted around March/April. Final results announced a few days before the next preliminary exam

  • UPSC Preliminary: Exam Pattern 

    General Studies Paper 1:
    Type:      Paper based test(Offline Mode)
    Duration: The duration of the General Studies paper 1 for UPSC Pre exam will be of 120 minutes.
    No. of Questions: 100 Objective type questions.
    Syllabus Covered: The Syllabus includes areas like; Indian National Movement, Indian Polity, Basic Economic Understanding, Geography. While these are static part of the syllabus, the dynamic part includes Current affairs,General Knowledge and that does not proper definition, thus making the syllabus quite vast.
    Marking Scheme: 2 marks will be awarded for every correct answer and 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.

    General Studies Paper 2:
    Type:      Paper based test(Offline Mode)
    Duration: The duration of the General Studies paper 2 for UPSC Pre exam will be of 120 minutes.
    No. of Questions: 80 Objective type questions.
    Syllabus Covered: Paper 2 is an Aptitude Test which is dynamic in nature and includes mathematics, reasoning, analytical ability and interpersonal skills. All these areas require spot mental ability.
    Marking Scheme: 2.5 marks will be awarded for every correct answer and 1/3 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.

    The Paper 2 is now of only qualifying nature and it's marks is not counted while making the merit list. However, it is mandatory for the candidate to score minimum 33% in this paper to qualify the Prelims Exam.

  • Preliminary Examination (400 Marks) (This is also called Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT) and is a common test for all applicants) The Prelims consists of two papers of 200 marks each Both the question papers are of the objective type (multiple choice questions) of two hours each The question papers will be set in both Hindi and English. However, questions related to English Language Comprehension skills would be provided only in English. Blind candidates would be allowed an extra 20 minutes of time for each paper  Main Examination (2075 Marks) Candidates who qualify Preliminary exam are called for the Main exam and on the basis of marks secured in the Main exam, they will be called for Interview The total marks of the Main exam and Interview sum up to produce the final result The written examination consists of the following papers:     Qualifying Papers  Paper I (Marks 300) One of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidates from the Languages included in the eighth schedule of the constitution Paper II (Marks 300) English Paper to be counted or merits (Technology, Economic Development,  Bio-diversity, Environment, Security  and Disaster Management)
